What is Craniosacral Therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy is a light touch therapy which focuses on the central nervous system, principally the brain and the spine. The nervous system is our body’s main communications system and this brain-spine relationship is the epicentre for the entire functioning of the human body. The nervous system can be accessed by Craniosacral therapy enabling the body space to heal, unravel, rewire and regenerate. This allows for a more conscious connection within the body where contractions within the skeletal structure, muscles, and nerves are released and energetic patterns and thought loops/behaviours will untangle and unwind.

What is it Good for?

Craniosacral therapy can help with the symptoms of chronic back pain, sciatica, migraines, headaches, TMJ, IBS, eye problems, depression, stress and anxiety as well as other mental and emotional problems. It is particularly good for babies to aid their recovery after the trauma of the birth process, consequently helping with colic, poor sleep or simply being unsettled, all very common conditions in early life. It is also very beneficial for mothers after childbirth, helping to restore, recover and recuperate.

"After having a challenging birthing experience where my baby was delivered by forceps, I was concerned about the trauma affecting my baby's development. I wanted my baby to have no recollection of this so I was quick to take him to Amber who I completely trusted. Her calming manner and depth of experience was apparent as she treated my baby. Although he cried during the treatment, I felt it was necessary to help him to remove a traumatic story from this new start in life. I have to say I was thrilled with the results as my baby was so calm and at peace thereafter. I have a happy baby and that's all I want for him and myself. Thank you Amber."

What Happens in a Treatment?

There is a benevolence within this practice that allows for the communication between the mind and body to be more connected and engaged and due to the fact it is so gentle, this therapy works well for babies as well as adults. Relief may come after two or three sessions but more long-standing conditions may require a longer period of treatment. During the treatment a comprehensive consultation will be taken as it is essential to fully understand the reasons for your visit.

Initial sessions last around 1.5 hours at least and follow-up sessions around one hour. You will remain clothed and lie on a couch face up or perhaps in a chair if you cannot lie down for any reason – a comfortable position is important so you can fully relax and tune into your body. I will place my hands on various parts of your body, often on the spine or head, but sometimes I may focus on other areas other then where your symptoms may occur. Babies are often treated in their mother (or father’s) arms or on a soft pillow on the treatment couch, and treatment times are generally shorter than for adults.

What will I feel?

Every body is different as every mind is different so you will experience something entirely unique to you and what you feel will depend on your sensitivity and connection with your own body and self. If you have never received this type of treatment before you may feel very little but with time and increased sensitivity and awareness, you may feel warmth or tingling in the body on a physical level, or you may find emotions come to the surface. Craniosacral therapy allows the brain to drop down to a Delta level state—the slowest of all brain wave patterns—as this is where healing and rebooting of the nervous system may occur—resulting in feeling deeply relaxed at the end of a treatment session.

Craniosacral Therapy works very well alongside any medical care you may be having but it is not a substitute for primary medical care. For more information please visit the website of the Craniosacral Therapy Association here.
